SYNOPSIS

In a late 1950s Long Island high school, two former friends reunite after a ten-year separation. Bobbie is thrilled. Phillis is terrified. Phillis must make Bobbie understand: interracial friendship is not as easy as it was when they were toddlers; Negroes and Whites cannot mix. Phillis embraced this philosophy in Mississippi when a White mob murdered her uncle. Bobbie’s efforts to rekindle their friendship only frighten Phillis more.
Despite Phillis’s opposition, Bobbie recruits six students, Negro and White, to stage a sit-in in their cafeteria with a determination to change their corner of the world. When other Negro and White kids begin to mingle, Phillis gives in, joins the effort, and the eight teenagers transform their school.
Romance blooms. Bobbie falls for Frank, a musician, and Phillis discovers that Leonard, an aspiring lawyer and friend of two years, is more than a friend.
Three girls: Cami, Ellie, and Winnie, don’t appreciate the new camaraderie. They taunt Bobbie with insults that culminate in an assault. Too happy with Frank and her friends, Bobbie tells no one.
Their world collapses when a fire breaks out in the biology lab. On scant evidence, the police accuse Phillis of arson and haul her off to jail. White students turn against her and the new racial harmony is destroyed.
Bobbie finally tells the others about the three girls and her suspicion they are the guilty ones, but there is no proof.
Released pending trial, Phillis returns to school. A riot breaks out in the cafeteria and only ends when police arrive, guns drawn, and an errant bullet strikes Bobbie.
At the hospital, Phillis and Frank are relieved to find it is only a minor wound. They call Leonard with the good news. But Leonard is gone. He has run away to join the Civil Rights demonstrations in Alabama. Phillis and Frank find him just as he is about to board a bus headed south. After a frantic series of phone calls, they reach the Reverend Martin Luther King, Junior.
“A live lawyer can do more for the Movement than a dead kid,” Reverend King tells Leonard.
Leonard returns to school, more determined than ever to get his law degree and further the Civil Rights crusade.
Bobbie is recuperating at home when she receives an unlikely visitor: Winnie has defected from the unholy threesome. Cami and Ellie started the fire, Winnie tells Bobbie, and framed Phillis. Winnie swears Bobbie to secrecy, afraid of retaliation from Cami.
In an elaborate plan, the kids trap Cami and Ellie into confessing and Phillis is cleared. Peace reigns in the school and the two couples are free to celebrate their love.
It’s not like before. The Nirvana-like bliss evaporated with the new awareness of racial hostility.
But Phillis and Bobbie are friends.
And it is enough for now.

• The cover should reflect the tone of the book. While it is based on a serious subject, it also has humor and romance. It should also reflect the late 1950s culture. The protagonists are two girls: one African-American, one White.

Nice to have

• Should reflect the both races - they are of equal importance. And some how get the idea of enforced distance between the two.

Should not have

• Shouldn't be too funny or too serious. A combination of both.
