Logo Design Brief
=== About us ===
Greyology is an app (iOS, Android, Web) that helps users teach themselves new things from their phone. For example - the capitals of all the countries in the world, morse code, US presidents, etc. This is useful for both nerdy adults who want to learn a bit of trivia and kids studying these things at school.
The name is a play on "grey matter", a part of your brain that processes new information (or something, I'm not a neurologist) and "ology", meaning a field of study.
=== Where will the logo be used? ===
The logo is a bit tricky because - while it'll start out on a web page where there's a lot of room - it'll also need to work as an app icon, in a smaller size for an app header on phones, etc. It's critical we be able to abstract one part of the logo - like a letter or an icon or something - for use in a square aspect app icon.
== Color and typeface ===
I like all of these colors and am shooting for something quite modern looking - https://www.materialpalette.com/ - but am open to your expert opinion on others. Happy with whatever font suits, I think simple / plain would be nice and the text will probably look better in caps. We're really, really open on typeface and color.
=== Inspiration ===
Here are a few ideas I thought looked cool, all of them incorporating brains (which I think would be a sensible choice for the icon).
http://i.imgur.com/YIgE8zj.png - don't love the overall look but I like the unconventional approach of drawing the brain like a circuit diagram
http://image.naldzgraphics.net/2013/06/14-fourteen-Megabrain.jpg I like the text (and the logo) but I worry this is too simple / isn't really modern when compared to some of the below
https://d3ui957tjb5bqd.cloudfront.net/images/screenshots/products/29/297/297964/digital-brain-f.jpg?1420973899 - another nice looking angular approach

http://deeleven.net/resources/uploads/2014/09/Poly_Brain_logo.png - I like how this takes the polygon approach and makes it 3d. This is probably my favourite - both imagery and text - but it could maybe be a bit more colorful?
http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/brain-opening-concept-creative-brain-abstract-vector-logo-design-template-corporate-business-industrial-logotype-symbol-49641425.jpg - the black logo against a coloured background looks cool here. If we did something more colourful like the above geometric designs, it'd be nice if it could be reduced to a single colour silhouette (maybe the vertices would go transparent but the faces would stay filled?) so we could use it like this too.
http://greymatterstrategies.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/GMS-Logo-Header2.png - I think it's cute how this integrates with the suit. I wouldn't want it in the logo itself, but it'd be nice if the brain design we end up with could be used for this kind of thing in future.
=== Wrapping up ===
I am very, very open to other ideas and - super important - I wouldn't want a logo that could be confused with any of these existing businesses. Given that logos are often displayed without text I would like it to be quite distinctive.
Overall the logo should look intelligent, modern and approachable. Hopefully this isn't too broad! Thanks for reading.
