Sticker Design Brief
We need a sticker design for the STARS Computing Corps that we can share at our own events and at exhibitor booths at other events. We have a logo that you can incorporate, but we welcome creative designs. We want something colorful that will stand out - not just the existing logo on a plain white background! We are also including the DesignCrowd "add-on" project to design an updated/alternative logo/brand as an add-on!
About STARS:
Nationally, there are significant disparities in computer science (CS) degree programs and in the computing workforce with respect to race, gender, and intersections thereof. Only 21% of CS graduates identified as women, 3% as Black, and 8.5% as Hispanic. These trends continue in industry; only 24% of tech professionals identify as women, 3.1% as having a disability, 8.8% as Black, and 8% as Hispanic.
The STARS Computing Corps (www.starscomputingcorps.org) is a national alliance of colleges and universities, with a mission to shift practices in college computing departments to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in computing. Specifically, STARS provides training, resources, and community to help college faculty and students to develop as leaders who take action to eliminate barriers to participation for historically excluded groups in computing and to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in computing.
Typically, college students participating in a STARS Computing Corps chapter will work with K12 teachers in their local communities to provide or enhance learning opportunities for K12 students. These projects are designed to promote persistence and career advancement in computing, by connecting computing to community and societal impacts; reinforcing computing knowledge through teaching and practice; developing professional, entrepreneurial, and creative skills, and developing a network of computing professionals with a shared commitment to diversity, equity, and computing. Faculty participating in STARS will typically adopt an inclusive practice within their department and/or engage in research that advances justice-centered computing education and workforce preparation.
An analysis of over 10 years of surveys from more than 2000 STARS students (38% Black, 8.7% Hispanic, 28% White/Asian/Multiracial/Other Women, and 24% White/Asian Men) shows that students felt that the STARS increased their intentions to persist in computing. These results were significantly higher for Black women and Black men. In addition, STARS students had positive gains in GPA, self-efficacy, computing identity, and commitment to computing, with enhanced outcomes for students who identify as women, Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian.
