Logo Design Brief
We are the official Railway Museum in Western Australia, dedicated to preserving and sharing the story of railways. Our role goes beyond trains — we present history, archives, and storytelling in a professional, museum setting.
We need a new logo that clearly communicates “museum” while reflecting our railway heritage. The new identity must be distinct from our parent organisation’s existing Rail Heritage WA logo (which features a railway wheel in red and yellow). This logo should stand alone as authoritative, timeless, and professional — more like a cultural institution (art gallery, maritime museum, state library) than a club or hobby group.
Design Requirements
Style
Clean, professional, and authoritative. It must feel like a museum identity, not a novelty attraction.
Typography
Strong sans serif fonts preferred (classic, institutional) for accessibility. Avoid playful or cartoonish fonts.
Colours
Preferred palettes with strong contrast (but not limited to)
Navy + Gold
Heritage Green + Cream
Charcoal + Burgundy
Please avoid red/yellow combinations (too close to our other branding).
Versatility
The design should work in full colour and in single colour, both at large scale (signage) and small scale (pins, embroidery).
Format
Primary Logo — “Railway Museum” (standalone).
Secondary Mark — emblem-only.
Optional Location Lockup — same logo with “Bassendean, W.A.” (or just “Bassendean”) beneath, so we can use it for context when needed.
Future Adaptability
While this project is focused on the Railway Museum, we would like the design to have the potential to be adapted for related institutions in the future (e.g., the South West Rail Heritage Centre). The core emblem should be strong enough to stand alone, with flexibility in the wording if needed.
Design Inspiration (Not Requirements)
We are open to different creative approaches. Some directions we would like to potentially include:
Heritage Interpretation — for example, symbolising archives, knowledge, storytelling.
Railway Symbols — such as tracks, locomotives, lanterns, signals, or station architecture.
Institutional Seals/Badges — circular or shield-based marks with a strong heritage or cultural feel.
These are inspirations only. Designers are welcome to explore other ideas that still communicate “Railway Museum” with authority and clarity.
What to Avoid
Overly detailed illustrations that won’t scale well.
Cartoonish or novelty designs.
Red/yellow colour schemes (too close to existing associated branding).
Ultra-modern “tech” logos with no heritage character.
