Must they have the photorealistic look and feel? or can it be a bit cartoony with the same aspects?

the problem with cartoon , it can be quick too childish....famous cartoons like the kind of Mickey mouse or Snoopy are good but it is not possible to use.
But I am open for any new ideas.
