Book Cover Design Brief
We need a cover for a book that is soon to be published.
The book belongs to the time travel genre with strong romantic overtones as well as a very strong historical element. Of the two time periods examined, we'd like to see elements from the time of the third Crusade. In particular, we'd like to see elements revolving around the figure of Richard the Lionheart.
The cover should also convey the romantic element stemming from the 2 parallel stories.
Our primary target audience are women who enjoy historical adventures (with a romantic undertone) as well as travellers to the beautiful Mediterranean island of Cyprus which acts as the backdrop to both stories.
Here's the back cover for the book:
The electrifying new historical adventure from the author of The Venetian - shortlisted for the EUROPEAN BOOK PRIZE 2012
A crusader. An inheritance. A riddle. A ring. A treasure hunt.
En route to the Holy Land during the Third Crusade, Richard the Lionheart conquers Cyprus. Among the men left behind to man the garrisons is his interpreter, Alan Archer, who falls in love with the doctor’s daughter, Irene, but all they have together is their honeymoon. Reincarnated in the 20th century, Alan returns as Dr. Tom Scott, who abandons his wife and five-year old son, Justin, so as to reunite with reincarnated Irene who has a one-year old daughter, Ellie. When Tom dies, his lawyer informs his estranged son of his inheritance and the clauses involved. Justin needs to spend three consecutive months in his father’s house and solve a riddle. Unexpected help comes from Ellie who doesn’t know that she’s entitled to the inheritance should Justin fail to fulfil the clauses. Unbeknownst to them, someone else is trying to solve the riddle for his own benefit.
“Should you decide to stay, there’s a riddle you need to solve in order to find a certain hidden object before the title deed can be transferred to your name.” The attorney-at-law took a sealed envelope out of the folder and handed him to Justin.
“I beg your pardon?” Justin’s eyebrows shot up.
A treasure hunt unveils the mystery of how a ring connects the lives of three English scholars from the Third Crusade, to the Turkish invasion, to modern-day Cyprus.
Updates
Project Deadline Extended
Reason: Even though the project has generated some very interesting proposals, the number of designers who have submitted is not very satisfactory. This time extension will probably allow the opportunity for more designers to feature their capabilities.

- Maps depicting the general region
- The ring - a central element of the riddle. In the book it's described only as:
- "Justin opened the rosewood case and gawked at the golden ring lying on its vermilion velvet bed. He took it in his hand and held it against the light. He turned it around in his fingers."
- “There’s an inscription. It’s in Greek. I think it reads ΑΛΑΝ-ΕΙΡΗΝΗ, Alan-Irene, 1192,” he read aloud and handed it over to her for confirmation.
Should not have
