Logo Design Brief

The American Orchid Society needs a logo created for a new orchid software product called OrchidPro.

LOGO TYPE:
We are leaning toward a logo with icon and text in a horizontal orientation but will consider alternate styles.

FORMATS:
We will need full-color versions in RGB and CMYK.

There should be a black and white version suitable for printing/copying/faxing in monochrome. We also need light

The logo must be vector-based or 300 DPI and suitable for print.

We will need the original source files (AI, PSD, ...) as well as PNG (with transparent background), JPG, PDF, EPS.

ICON:
The icon could be an illustration of an orchid. It must be original, and not from a stock photography collection. We need the logo to be unique and we intend to trademark it.

TEXT:
We tend to use sanserif fonts. Clean and professional.

The text can be mixed case like: OrchidPro

Or the text could be full caps like: ORCHIDPRO

Both options could use a two-tone color scheme ("Orchid" could be a different color than "Pro"), but if going with the all caps direction, a two-tone color scheme, different font-weight (normal vs bold), or alternate font for one word vs the other would be needed.

DESIRED VARIATIONS (if not too much trouble):
We would be delighted to receive a few variations of the logo such as the Icon without the text, the text under the icon (in a square layout), the letters OP in the same style of text as the full logo with a background (shaded or with the icon as a watermark).

IMPORTANT:
Any orchid illustrations used in the logo must reasonably represent a real orchid (abstract orchids, petals or buds in unnatural directions will not work).

POPULAR ORCHIDS TO CONSIDER FOR ICONS/DESIGN:
Popular orchids include Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Vanda, Paphiopedilum, Miltonia, Phragmipedium...though we are open to other orchid families (genera) as well.

COLORS:
Colors used on the website and web-based applications are green, purple, gray like on http://aos.org/join

We are open to other color options as well such as earth tones, the natural colors of any orchid used in the design, and so on.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ABOUT THE SOFTWARE:
The orchid software (OrchidPro) will soon be made available to all AOS members. The software allows users to search and discover over 95,000 photos of award-winning orchids, see orchid genealogy (like orchid family trees, species makeup, progeny, and so on.)

They can search for orchids using numerous criteria or browse by photos. The application will continue to add new features and will soon include the ability to search for Orchids magazine (an AOS publication) articles and photos, and include the most extensive orchid data and photos of any similar software.

COMMUNICATION:
You can expect rapid scoring and feedback from us throughout this project. Completing this logo is a high priority for us.

We'll provide more ratings and feedback on Monday, July 28th. In the meantime, here are some key things we are looking for in the logos...

* We would like "Pro" to be more prominent than "Orchid"
* The font should work well with the icon and ideally make the logo more memorable
* We're leaning toward realistic styles of orchids (but trying to keep an open mind for particularly interesting designs that are a bit more abstract)
* The main logo needs to have the icon on the left of the text (though we will want a variation with the icon on top of the text, etc.)

Nice work everyone. I've gathered most of the logos to send to our team for review, and we'll be posting more ratings and feedback tomorrow (Monday).

We will likely select a final design on or before the end of the day Tuesday, July 30th.
